South Beach Diet Essay -- Health, Diet
History of South Beach Diet The South Beach Diet is a diet plan designed by cardiologist Arthur Agatston and dietician Marie Almon. In 1995, Dr. Agatston developed a diet to prevent heart disease for his cardiac and diabetes patients. According to the South Beach Diet website, Agatstaion knew that a low-fat diet would reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease, but patients had a hard time sticking to the diet. Agatson wanted to find out the reason why his patients had a hard time sticking to the low-fat diet. So he turned to David Jenkins, who was working with insulin resistance. After researching with Jenkins, Agatstion found out the reason why the low-fat diets was not working because patients on low-fat diets where consuming more simple sugars and carbohydrates which was causing the insulin resistance and cycles of hunger. Also Agastaion was investigating the low-carbohydrate diet but he felt it didnââ¬â¢t have enough fiber and had too much saturated fats. Agagaston wanted balance in his diet so it wou ld produce the best results. (South Beach Diet Online, 2010) Agatstion made the The South beach Diet based on eating healthy carbohydrates and fats and eliminating the bad carbohydrates and fats. According to Mary Hager in her article ââ¬Å"The South Beach Solutionâ⬠, the South Beach beach diet cuts out the bad fats which are the saturated fats that include hydrogenated oils and trans fat. Also it cuts down the bad carbohydrates, the refined and process foods. Hager states ââ¬Å"His plan emphasizes eating the good fats--olive and canola oils--and good carbs, including vegetables, legumes and whole grains.â⬠(Hager,2004,p.63) After Agatston developed the South diet based on these principles, he started to do assessments on his patients who... ...on how to follow Phase 1 (the first two weeks) and Phase 2 (the next ten weeks) of the South Beach Diet, eating three meals and two snacks per day.â⬠The results of the research showed that after Phase 1, the participants descrease weight, body percentage, and waist circumference. The results by the participants blood tests and the researchers concluded that the South Beach Diet helped the participants with their loss of weight and body fat. Evaluate the Nutritional Adequacy of the Diet South beach Diet during the first phase is not a well balance diet. Phase 1 focuses on mainly the meat, vegetable, diary, and oil food groups; leaving out the grains and fruit group. In order to well balance diet you need to have all the groups incoraprated into the diet. After Phase 2 the diet is less restricted and is more balanced because it incorporates all the food groups. Of Mice and Men Essay
In Steinbeckââ¬â¢s novel Of Mice and Men, the characters are trenchantly described as ââ¬Å"Lonely Dreamers.â⬠Since there was a stock crash in 1929 everyone got economically depressed. Lennie and George are two men who go to work on a ranch. They encounter many complications. Crooks one of the ranchers wanted to be equal to the others. Candy is a poor old swamper who is depressed of friends and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife wants to be a film star but canââ¬â¢t, so they all suffer and therefore dream and are lonely. George Milton is a lonely dreamer who has a friend named Lennie Small who is very immature and George is an outcast between the ranchers. The company of Lennie makes George feel lonely and make a picture in his mind about a dream-come-true ranch. George thinks that they (Lennie and George) are the loneliest ranchers because they have no family so George tells Lennie: ââ¬Å"Guys like us that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They donââ¬â¢t belong no place. (Steinbeck 31-32) Here loneliness is expressed through George, talking about the unexisting family. George has no quality conversations with someone of his own age, because Lennie is very immature. George desires a family and someone to talk to who understands. George Milton dream a lot. He always keeps on complaining that he had to look after Lennie but if he didnââ¬â¢t he could go an make fifty bucks by working in another job. He could then use the money and go buy something he likes, or go to a whore house. George was definitely dreaming because he wasnââ¬â¢t going to leave Lennie alone and please his own will, he tells Lennie what he feels: ââ¬Å"Anââ¬â¢ when the end of the month came I would take my fifty bucks and go to aâ⬠¦.cat houseâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Steinbeck 145: 2000 Ed) George was not allowed to leave Lennie, runaway and get money, it is impossible because George promised Aunt Clara and he would feel guilty to leave Lennie who doesnââ¬â¢t know how to handle things. George was in a very hard position. Lennie didnââ¬â¢t have much of a family except George who scolds Lennie all the time. If George had a fight with Lennie then Lennie would feel very lonely and have no one to talk to. When Lennie became friendly with George then he would be very happy because he would know that he has George and George has Lennie to look after each other, so he expresses his feelings towards George: ââ¬Å"Becauseâ⬠¦..because I got you to look after me and, you got me to look after you, and thatââ¬â¢s why.â⬠(Steinbeck 32: 2000 Ed) Since them both had each other then Lennie didnââ¬â¢t feel lonely and so had someone to talk to. IT was Georgeââ¬â¢s job to look after Lennie so they had to stick together. Lennie small has dreams like us. George thinks of having a dream garden and keeps on telling Lennie about it because Lennie wants to ââ¬Ëtend the rabbitsââ¬â¢ so he keeps on wanting to hear about the garden. He also wants to hear about what all is going to be in the garden so Lennie is imagining all of this because he wonââ¬â¢t get the dream garden so he asks again: ââ¬Å"Go on; George! Tell about what weââ¬â¢re gonna have in the garden and about the rabbits in the cages and about the rain in the winter and the stove.â⬠(Steinbeckââ¬â¢s 32: 2000 Ed) Lennie really likes animals and soft things so he really wants to pet the rabbits and experience the rain in the winter while he is in his imaginary garden. Crooks is a very lonely man because he doesnââ¬â¢t have many friends and is a victim on racial prejudice. Since Crooks has no one with him he always sits up at night getting bored and not doing anything just thinking ok companionship, equality, how lonely he is, what and outcast he is and how racist others are towards him. Since he is an afro- American man and the others are white. He then expresses his feelings: ââ¬Å"A guy sets alone out here at night, maybe readinââ¬â¢ books or thinkinââ¬â¢ or stuff like that.â⬠(Steinbeck 105: 2000 ed) Since Crooks is so lonely he is really sad because he finds it very hard to make friends and act the same as the others. Crooks is now having a rough time. Crooks is dreaming of seeing hundreds of men walking o the ranches because there arenââ¬â¢t many people on the ranches anyway because no one likes the ranches. Since Crooks is always dreaming he imagines many things, so he dreams that he sees: ââ¬Å"I see hundreds of men bye on the roadââ¬â¢ an on the ranches with their bindles on their back.â⬠(Steinbeck 106: 2000 Ed) I think Crooks has an imaginative mind because he is severly lonely because of his skin colour and race and what others think of him. Candy is one of the ranchers who is lonely too and like George and Lennie doesnââ¬â¢t have any relatives with him. Even Candy doesnââ¬â¢t have many friends. Candy is also old so he thinks that one that he will die and leave his belongings with Lennie and George since Candy doesnââ¬â¢t have anyone else. Candy tells Lennie and George: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d make a will anââ¬â¢ leave my share to you guyz in case I kick off,ââ¬â¢ cause I ainââ¬â¢t got no relatives nor nothing.â⬠(Steinbeck 71: 2000ed) Candy really wants to go away since he doesnââ¬â¢t have anybody with him. So he always thinks how unlucky he is and how deprived he is of his family. Since Candy doesnââ¬â¢t have much company in the bunk house he hears Lennie and George talking about their imaginative ranch which Candy finds very nice and would like to live on a ranch like they want to. So Candy is prepared to do something in the ranch and share some property so he adds in saying: ââ¬Å"Sââ¬â¢pose I went in with you guys. Thaââ¬â¢s three hundred amââ¬â¢ fifty bucks Iââ¬â¢d put in. I ainââ¬â¢t much good, but I could tend the chickens.â⬠(Steinbeck 87: 2000 Ed) Candy was so upset about his life so he really dreams of doing things but canââ¬â¢t because it is too difficult for him, but would like to do something with others. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is in a really bad shape since she has a horrible husband and no one likes her because of the way she acts and dresses, for e.g. she flirts with the ranchers, wears bright red lipstick and nail polish and so everyone wants to keep their distance from her. She only has a poor old dog to give her company since her husband is so mean to her so she complains: ââ¬Å"Why canââ¬â¢t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.â⬠(Steinbeck 122: 2000ed) She is really upset with her life and is miserably lonely. She is one of the rejects, because of who she is. She has a bad attitude and dresses up really badly, also the way she talks is very annoying.

John Locke and Thomas Hobbes on Government and the Governed
John Locke (1689) and Thomas Hobbes (2010) share a common underlying concern: establishing a social contract between the government and the governed. To be legitimate, government must rest in the final analysis on the ââ¬Å"consentâ⬠of the governed, they maintain. They also share a common view of humanity as prone to selfishness (Morgan, 2011 p. 575-800). Given the modern era, Hobbes views of the state of nature and government seem antiquated; no longer do the masses wish to be subservient to anyone man without question. Lockean principals are now the base for todayââ¬â¢s modern, just, prosperous and free states. Government is needed in the first place, as James Madison (2009) once put it, because ââ¬Å"men are not angels.â⬠Left to themselves, Hobbes believed total chaos and societal breakdown would result. He called this scenario a ââ¬Å"war of all against allâ⬠(Klenner, 2005, p. 673). Men were almost animal-like in Hobbesââ¬â¢ view, brutish and ope rating out of base primal instinct for personal survival and advancement. Locke foresaw the same potential threat as Hobbes, but he felt that man, as a social, animal, also had an innate desire to cooperate as well as compete. He could choose to be virtuous as well as venal (Morgan, 2011, p. 716). Not simply because he was ââ¬Å"good,â⬠but because cooperation and conflict reduction were also in his enlightened self-interest (Morgan, 2011, p. 594). Locke, unlike Hobbes, was a Deist, and was influenced by his religious view of man. What Is a Coup dââ¬â¢Etat Definition and Examples
A coup detat is the sudden, often violent overthrow of an existing government by a small group. The coup detat, also known as coup, is typically an illegal, unconstitutional seizure of power conducted by a dictator, a guerrilla military force, or an opposing political faction.à Key Takeaways: Coup d'Etat A coup detat is the illegal, often violent overthrow of an existing government or leader by a small group.Coups detat are typically conducted by aspiring dictators, military forces, or opposing political factions.Unlike revolutions, coups detat usually seek only to replace key government personnel rather than forcing sweeping changes to the countryââ¬â¢s fundamental social and political ideology. Coup dââ¬â¢Etat Definition In his dataset of coups, University of Kentucky political scientist Clayton Thyne defines coups dââ¬â¢etat as ââ¬Å"illegal and overt attempts by the military or other elites within the state apparatus to unseat the sitting executive.â⬠As a key to success, groups attempting coups typically seek to gain the support of all or parts of the countryââ¬â¢s armed forces, the police, and other military elements. Unlike revolutions, which are undertaken by large groups of people seeking sweeping social, economic, and political change, including the form of government itself, a coup seeks only to replace key government personnel. Coups rarely change a countryââ¬â¢s fundamental social and political ideology, such as replacing a monarchy with a democracy. In one of the first modern coups, Napoleon Bonaparte overthrew the ruling French Committee of Public Safety and replaced it with the French Consulate on November 9, 1799, in the bloodless Coup of 18-19 Brumaire. More violent coups were common in Latin American nations during the 19th century and in Africa during the 1950s and 1960s as the nations gained independence.à Types of Coups dââ¬â¢Etat As described by political scientist Samuel P. Huntington in his 1968 book Political Order in Changing Societies, there are three generally recognized types of coups: The breakthrough coup: In this most-common type of takeover, an opposing group of civilian or military organizers overthrows the seated government and installs themselves as the nationââ¬â¢s new leaders. The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, in which Russian Communists led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin overthrew the tsarist regime, is an example of a breakthrough coup. The guardian coup: Typically justified as being for the ââ¬Å"broader good of the nation,â⬠the guardian coup occurs when one elite group seizes power from another elite group. For example, an army general overthrows a king or president. Some consider the 2013 overthrow of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi as part of the Arab Spring to have been a guardian coup. The veto coup: In a veto coup, the military steps in to prevent radical political change. The failed 2016 coup conducted by a faction of the Turkish military in an attempt to prevent what it considered Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoganââ¬â¢s assault on secularism could be considered a veto coup. Recent Examples of Coups dââ¬â¢Etat While they have been recorded since about 876 BCE, significant coups dââ¬â¢etat continue to take place today. Here are four recent examples: 2011 Egyptian Coup dââ¬â¢Etat On Feburary 11, 2011, 30-year Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned, launching the country into an era of reform. Monique Jaques / Getty Images Beginning on January 25, 2011, millions of civilians staged demonstrations demanding the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The protestorsââ¬â¢ grievances included police brutality, denial of political and civil liberty, high unemployment, food-price inflation, and low wages. Mubarak resigned on February 11, 2011, with power handed over to a military junta, headed by the effective head of state Mohamed Hussein Tantawi. At least 846 people were killed and over 6,000 injured in violent confrontations between protesters and Mubarakââ¬â¢s personal security forces. 2013 Egyptian Coup dââ¬â¢Etat The next Egyptian coup detat took place on July 3, 2013. A military coalition led by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi removed recently-elected President Mohamed Morsi from power and suspended the Egyptian constitution adopted after the 2011 coup. After Morsi and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood were arrested, violent confrontations between Morsiââ¬â¢s supporters and opponents spread across Egypt. On August 14, 2013, police and military forces massacred hundreds of pro-Morsi and Muslim Brotherhood protestors. Human Rights Watch documented 817 deaths, ââ¬Å"one of the worlds largest killings of demonstrators in a single day in recent history.â⬠As a result of the coup and ensuing violence, Egyptââ¬â¢s membership in the African Union was suspended. 2016 Turkish Coup dââ¬â¢Etat Attempt People shout, gestures and hold Turkish national flags as they gather in Taksim square in Istanbul, on July 18, 2016 following the military failed coup attempt of July 15. à DANIEL MIHAILESCU / Getty Images On July 15, 2016, the Turkish military attempted a coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdoßan and his Islamic secular government. Organized as the Peace at Home Council, the military faction was defeated by forces loyal to Erdoßan. As reasons for the attempted coup, the Council cited an erosion of strict Islamic secularism under Erdoßan, along with his elimination of democracy and human rights violations related to his oppression of the ethnic Kurdish population. Over 300 people were killed during the failed coup. In retaliation, Erdoßan ordered the arrests of an estimated 77,000 people. 2019 Sudanese Coup dââ¬â¢Etat Sudanese supporters of the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) hold up a sign showing a portrait of its head General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan with a caption below reading in Arabic Al-Burhan, upon you is the trust, during a rally in the centre of the capital Khartoum on May 31, 2019. à ASHRAF SHAZLY / Getty Images On April 11, 2019, iron-fisted Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir was removed from power by a faction of the Sudanese military after nearly 30 years in office. After al-Bashirs arrest, the countrys constitution was suspended and the government was dissolved. On April 12, 2019, the day after al-Bashirââ¬â¢s overthrow, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was sworn in as chairman of Sudans ruling Transitional Military Council and official head of state. Question: Discuss about the Nonfinancial Information And Their Impact On The Economies. Answer: Introduction The process of business reporting is an important aspect for the business organizations as it helps the stakeholders of the organizations know about the business operatic and financial position about the companies (Council, 2014). During the past two decades, several initiatives have been taken to improve the process of business reporting for the businesses. One such step is to disclose more nonfinancial information of the organizations in the annual report. The reason of doing so is that investors all over the world are considering the nonfinancial information of the organizations at the time of investments (Dhaliwal et al., 2012).). Hence, one cannot ignore the growing importance of nonfinancial information of the business organizations. It can be seen that there are different kinds of nonfinancial information in the business organizations that have significant impact on the economic aspects of the businesses. The main aim of this report is to analyze and evaluate the various aspec ts of nonfinancial information and their impact on the economies. Identification and Discussion of the Nature of Nonfinancial Information In the business era of twenty-first centuries, Nonfinancial Reporting is one of the major concepts. Nonfinancial Reporting, commonly known as Sustainability Reporting refers to the process of disclosing the nonfinancial data and information of the business organizations. In a business organization, different kinds of nonfinancial information are there. They are corporate social responsibility reporting; environment, social and governance (ESG) reporting: environmental reporting: social reporting: green banking disclosures and others. The nature of these aspects is discussed under: Corporate Social Responsibility refers to a specific corporate management approach that helps in the application of various sustainability values in the business organizations. The main objective of corporate social responsibility reporting or CSR reporting is the promotion of social welfare in the business organizations and outside the business organizations. The process of corporate social responsibility in the organizations assists in the employment of various ethical business concepts and supports in the preservation of the nature in which the business organizations operate (Cheng, Ioannou Serafeim, 2014). Another important nonfinancial reporting factor is Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting (ESG Reporting). As per the recent tread all over the world, the investor all over the globe are considering the environmental, social and governing factors in the annual reports of the organizations as material factors in the process of investment decision-making. ESG deals with a wide range of impacts on the investment factors. Some of the major issues that ESG deals with are change in the business regulations, various business ethics, operational strategies and many others (Murphy McGrath, 2013). The next nonfinancial factor is the process of environmental reporting. Environmental reporting refers to the production of narrative as well as enumerative information on the different kinds of environmental initiatives of the business organizations. The narrative information in the process of environmental reporting is used to provide explanations and reasons to fail in the environmental initiatives against the previous years (Bouten, Everaert Roberts, 2012). On the other hand, numerical environmental disclosure is needed for the reporting of various types of environmental initiatives. Another most important aspect is the process of social reporting. Social reporting is the process of the reporting of some major activities of the business organizations that have significant effects on the society and environment. On a more precise note, social reporting is the process of reporting and measuring the information that has impact on the society (Hys Hawrysz, 2012). There are differen t kinds of business activities of the businesses that have negative impacts on the society. Hence, it is the responsibility of the business organizations to report all these activities along with the impact of them in the annual reports. Another important aspect is the process of green banking disclosures. The main objective of the policy of green banking is to protect the earth from various environmental calamities like global warming, increase in carbon emission, scarcity of natural resources and others. The policy of green banking has become vastly popular all over the world (Bahl, 2012). Identification and Discussion of the Nature of Economic Consequences In the business organizations, both financial and nonfinancial information have their own significance. In this process, one can simply not ignore the impact of nonfinancial information on the economic factors like the debt market and the capital market. There is a deep relationship between the stock prices and the sentiment of the investors. Various nonfinancial events affect both the capital and debt market like macroeconomic releases, environmental changes all over the globe and many others. It has been seen that inventors all over the world are considering the various news of the companies regarding the nonfinancial information at the time of making the investment-decision (Cohen et al., 2012). The investors are considering the fact that this nonfinancial information has the power to affect the debt as well as capital market. There is not any place to doubt the fact that financial reporting has a significant importance on the economic factors of the organizations. However, lookin g at the growing importance of the various sustainable and environmental factors, the nonfinancial information and the nonfinancial reporting are playing significant part in the economic aspects of both the investors and the companies. It can be seen that business organizations having effective sustainable reporting procedures have shares with higher prices and their shares are trading on an effective basis. The reason is that people all over the world have started taking the various environmental aspects seriously. Hence, it can be said that nonfinancial information has impacts on the economic aspects like the capital and debt market (Dhaliwal et al., 2012). Reporting Procedures of Nonfinancial Information Business organizations need to follow certain structure, framework and regulations at the time of the reporting of nonfinancial information. GRI is one of the major frameworks that is followed all over the globe for the reporting of nonfinancial information. Another major principle that is followed at the time of reporting the nonfinancial information is the Account Ability AA1000 Principle Standards 2008 (AA1000APS). It can be seen that there is an important update in the GRI framework and it has converted to GRI-G3 framework. This latest framework has been useful for the organizations to support the sustainability reporting of them. Apart from the GRI framework, certain principles are there for the reporting of nonfinancial information. The principle of inclusivity states that the business organizations should be accountable to the stakeholders for disclosing all the nonfinancial information of the business organizations. In this regard, AA1000APS is an important aspect. The next p rinciple if materiality (Bhaduri Selarka, 2016). The materiality principles state that the nonfinancial information need to be material and hence, they should influence the in the process of investment decision-making. As per the principle of responsiveness, it is the responsibility of the organizations to provide accurate and dependable nonfinancial information to its stakeholders. As per the principle of completeness as per GRI-G3, the provided nonfinancial information to the stakeholders of the organizations needs to be complete in nature. Apart from the principles, another most important aspect is assurance. As per ISAE 3000 and AA1000APS 2008, the nonfinancial information needs two types of assurance (Simnett, 2012). They are reasonable or high assurance and limited or moderate assurance. Based on the nature of the nonfinancial information, the level of assurance is provided. These are the major components of nonfinancial information reporting that are needed in the reporting process. Integration The above discussion states that the disclosure of nonfinancial information has become a major requirement for the business organization. There are different procedures of disclosing the nonfinancial information of a business organization; they are corporate social responsibility reporting; environment, social and governance (ESG) reporting: environmental reporting: social reporting: green banking disclosures and other. The main objective behind all these reporting procedures is to properly disclosed the nonfinancial information of the organizations. All this nonfinancial information has massive impact on different economic factious like the debt market, capital market and others. It can be seen that the investor of the companies put a close view on the sustainability reporting of the business organization as the nonfinancial information plays an important role on their investment decision-making process. This is the reason the share prices of the organizations depends on the disclos ure of the nonfinancial information. Hence, it is the responsibility of the business organizations to follow all the required principles and framework at the time of reporting the nonfinancial information. The organizations need to follow the GRI-G3 and AA1000APS 2008 framework for the reporting of nonfinancial information. The required principles in this regard are inclusivity, materiality, responsiveness, completeness and others along with necessary assurance. Conclusion From the above discussion, it can be said that the process of the reporting of nonfinancial information for the business organizations is a major aspect that has impact on the economic factors of the organizations. It is the responsibility of the organizations to disclose all the nonfinancial information to the potential investors as they play an integral part on the investment decision of the investors. Hence, the business organizations need to comply with all the principles and with the necessary framework for the reporting of nonfinancial information. This process is beneficial for both the organizations and their stakeholders. References Bahl, S. (2012).
